How often do you see a missed goal as an opportunity?

Not meeting a goal can feel devastating, especially when you’ve worked hard for it.

I've come to see that sometimes it's also a great opportunity to reassess, reflect, and look at the bigger picture.

In 2021, I applied for this training programme with Think Ahead, a pathway for graduates and career changers to become Mental Health Social Workers.

I didn’t make it past the first round of applications. At the time it felt like a huge setback. One of the key reasons I had even gone to university in 2018 to get a degree was so I could apply for this exact opportunity.

It left me feeling uncertain of what to do next and questioning whether I had wasted my time pursuing a degree in the 1st place.

Fast forward three years and now I’m actually grateful it didn’t work out.

That set back gave me the chance to re-evaluate whether my original goal was still the right one.

As it turned out going straight into a master’s programme after graduating would not have been the best path for me!

When a goal doesn’t work out it can be the perfect opportunity to reassess.

If you’re feeling stuck or lost after missing out on something, I invite you to take a step back and look at it from a different perspective.

You might just find that the missed opportunity opens up space for something even better.
